European CCS Demonstration Project Network 2009 – 2018
The European CCS Demonstration Project Network was established by the European Commission in 2009 to foster knowledge sharing and raise awareness of the benefits of carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The Network, which was managed by the Global CCS Institute, comprised large-scale CCS projects being developed with funding from the European Energy Programme for Recovery (EEPR) to demonstrate the technology. The goal then was to deliver viable and safe commercial-scale CCS by 2020.
The onset of the 2007 financial crisis, and a sharp drop in the EU Emissions Trading System prices over 2008, damaged the business case for CCS technologies and affected efforts to raise the high capital investment needed for such demonstration projects.
These and other factors led to the premature cancellation of a number of the projects by 2013, significantly reducing the impact and knowledge sharing potential of the network.
More recent events and public engagement have raised the profile of CCUS and its necessity as part of global climate action. The need for knowledge-sharing among existing and potential European CCS projects is more urgent than ever.
In 2018, the Commission launched a new call to reinvigorate the Network and bring carbon capture, utilisation and storage back into its sphere.
