Port of Rotterdam, Gasunie and EBN are jointly preparing a new project in which CO2 generated by industry in Rotterdam’s port area would be captured and stored in depleted gas fields deep below the North Sea seabed. The Porthos Project - Port of Rotterdam CO2 Transport Hub and Offshore Storage - concept is based on a collective pipeline of 30-33 kilometres that would run through Rotterdam’s port area. This pipeline will serve as a basic infrastructure, which a variety of industrial parties could connect to in order to dispose of CO2 captured at their facilities. The Porthos infrastructure will also be suitable for transporting CO2 for use by industry, if there is demand for this in the future. Most of the CO2 will be liquefied at a compressor station prior to offshore transport. It will then be transported via pipeline to a depleted natural gas field 20-25 km off the coast. By 2030, the project partners are expecting to be able to store between 2 million and 5 million tonnes of CO2 every year.
