In May 2019, Drax Group, Equinor and National Grid Ventures formed a new partnership to explore the opportunity to develop a large-scale carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen cluster in the Humber region.
The Consortium’s vision is to create the infrastructure required to transform the Humber into the world’s first ‘net zero’ carbon industrial cluster. This would safeguard existing jobs in the area, create new economic opportunities and position the region as a world-leader in green growth. It would also support other decarbonisation projects in the wider region, such as the H21 North of England project and the Teesside industrial cluster.
The three companies are pursuing several ground-breaking projects that could transform the region, including:
Applying CCUS technology to the four existing biomass units at Drax Power Station, removing up to 16 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere each year;
Building a large-scale hydrogen production facility located at Drax Power Station, providing a low carbon fuel to decarbonise industry, heat, transport and power; and
Constructing a large-scale CO2 transportation and storage network in the Humber region, which would capture emissions from industrial businesses and safely store them offshore in the southern North Sea.
